Shortly after the town of Lucignano d'Arbia, proceeding towards Buonconvento, a dirt road begins on the left. At the crossroads, the road sign indicates: ASCIANO and taking it you arrive at this locality, using an ancient path that flanks the valley of the Ombrone river, climbing up the hill ridges to its left.
The road, between curves and climbs, reaches Montauto, an ancient medieval town and an important observation point for controlling the territory between Asciano and Buonconvento. The locality, now a private villa, is fenced off and cannot be visited. You can only visit a small church located along the road, right in front of the entrance gate to the villa.
From this point on, the traveler's attention is captured by a barren but particularly fascinating landscape which, on clear days, stretches as far as the Casentinese Apennines.
Proceeding along the route, which is rather difficult due to a bumpy and bumpy road surface, the road, the municipal part and the local part, is however passable both by car, by bike and on foot.
Due to some stretches in clay and mainly in the shade, it is advisable to tackle the excursion in the dry season. In recent years, the road has been regularly covered with gravel since it has been permanently included in the "L'Eroica" route, but a good rain is enough to make it dangerous.
However, this route is one of the most beautiful for those who appreciate the landscape south of Siena and, once you arrive in Asciano, you can proceed on the other unpaved route that leads to Monte Sante Marie and Torre a Castello, a locality that is included in the route. of the Eroica.
