DESCRIPTIVE INFORMATION

The sculptor, trained in the large building site of the Sienese cathedral, Tino di Camaino underwent the charm of the dramatic and expressive sculpture of Giovanni Pisano, master builder of the Cathedral of Siena between 1284 and 1297. Meditation on the works of Pisano and contact with fluid and elegant rhythms of Simone Martini's painting led our artist to the elaboration of an extremely original language, interested in the sculptural transposition of the chromatic effects and refined forms of the contemporary pictorial production. The structure of the relief and the arrangement of the figures derive in fact from the triptychs made by the great masters of the early 14th century from Siena: peculiar to the art of our sculptor is the wide, dilated restitution of the volumes of the figures, molded in a smooth and smooth material that enhances the care and refinement of details. The vigorous plasticism of the faces, underlined by the powerful development of the robust jaw, is accompanied by the pictorial treatment of the beard of Saint John the Baptist and the hair of the sacred characters whose eyes, with an elegant elongated profile, refer to the refined prototypes of Simone Martini.
