The church was once dedicated to St. John the Baptist and belonged to the Gerosolimitan monastery, located on its right and in front of the ancient "Hospitale" of Santa Maria. With the suppression of the Gerosolimitan order, everything was assigned to the Command of the Knights of Malta From the late eighteenth century it was given to the confreres of the Company of San Bernardino, testified by their effigy on the facade.
At the time of the Crusades in the Holy Land, the Benedictine monks of Cluny took care of the sick, the weak and the nullients, setting up the hospital of St. John of Jerusalem.
From the Order of Hosts of St. John in Jerusalem, the Order of the Gerosolimitans was born, recognized with a Paschal Pope II bull of 1113. On the tunic of the monks of this order, the white cross appeared like that of the Republic of Amalfi, from which The Benedictine monks of Cluny leave.
The popularity and power of this Hospice Order grew so much, thanks to donations made to the reconquest of the Holy Land, which in 1319 was decided to suppress it. It was in the years following the suppression that many of their convents, including that of Asciano, ran into the hands of the Knights of Malta who perished there until almost 1800.
A question remains unresolved, because the Hieronymized Gerosolimitan Order had a Convent and a Hospitaller in Asciano, if their role was to give support to direct pilgrims to the Holy Land?
