This convent was clearly documented as early as the first half of the 14th century, thanks to bequests made for its construction and subsequent expansion. Up to the second half of the fifth century it looked much less impressive than it does today.
Indeed, the Renaissance structure that can be seen from the Corso Matteotti, the main street of Asciano, was added in that period. With the Napoleonic edicts suppressing religious orders, the convent was turned into an apartment building. In 1857 the Vegni family who owned the property turned it over to the Confraternità di Misericordia (Brotherhood of Mercy).
The modest original structure of the convent, consisting of a series of monastic cells placed around a cloister, in the center of which there was a water supply well, was transformed and enriched by an imposing factory body added to the front, Where there already existed the gateway to the convent, even before the '400.
This new construction coincides with the transfer of the Lauretano route from what is now via Bartolenga to the current route coinciding with Corso Matteotti. The confirmation of what has been said, is clearly in the articulation of existing buildings, highlighting a perfect alignment between the original façade of the chapel of S. Agostino and the old walls of the convent.
The proof of what has been said lies in the architecture of the tunnel access gallery. In fact, just over half of the existing entrance are the original columns of the old access portal and from there onwards, the construction technique marks an absolute discontinuity with the rest.
